Urban Herbals Philosophy:

Urban Herbals is commited to providing a wide range of high quality, mainy organic and biodynamic herbs to the public.  These products have been produced by a professional herbalist in the UK.

Urban Herbals is commited to providing excellent value for money.

Urban Herbals belives in presenting information about products in a professional and responsible manner.

Urban Herbals has a commitment to environmental and ethical concerns surrounding the harvesting of wild herbs. We will not knowingly supply any product made from endangered herbs harvested in the wild. We are passionate about this. After all, many people  care about where their food comes from, but do not always consider where their medicines and skin care products are sourced from.

All our herbs are sourced sustainably. Many more of our tinctures are gradually being replaced with locally made tinctures from our organic and biodynamic herb farm in Essex. Our farm does not yet have official organic certification.

Wherever possible, recycled and/or compostable packaging are used.

Anything we cannot soure from the farm such as dried herbs and base ingredients for our oils and creams are ethically and sustainably sourced and are either certified organic or non certified organic = wild crafted.

Certification, a question of 'organics'?

Urban Herbal products do not have any independent certification but they do use a very high percentage of organic ingredients and are completely free from parabens, sls, mineral oil, synthetic colour or fragrance with one or 2 exceptions mentioned below. The terms for products or ingredients marked up as ‘ORGANIC’ are changing. The MHRA and the Advertising Standards are reviewing what this term actually means and how it can be used in the future. All you need to be assured of from Urban Herbals is that no artificial chemicals and nasty sprays have been used in the growing of the herbs supplied, they are grown without pesticides, which is why we mark our herbs up as wild crafted/organic.

We never use:

• Parabens (preservatives) – can cause allergic reactions and linked to oestrogen overproduction. Instead we use natural ingredients with preservative properties

• Synthetic fragrances – often associated with allergic reactions. Instead we use 100% pure essential oils – for their wonderful aromas and therapeutic properties

• Synthetic colours – often associated with allergic reactions. If we want additional colour, we use natural therapeutic oils such as avocado, carrot or calendula

• Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) – a synthetic detergent and possible skin irritant. Instead we use plant-based detergents that are effective and gentle on the skin

None of the Urban Herbals products or their ingredients have been tested on animals Urban Herbals products are attractively packaged in brown recyclable glass for 100ml tinctures, creams and ointments. Larger herbal blends are now packaged in HDPE plastic, safer and more durable for posting larger quantities in the mail.Dried herbs and medicinal tea blends are packaged in biodegradable brown paper kraft bags.

A word about mineral oils:

As a general rule we do not use mineral oils/ingredients, with one or two exceptions. We have had requests from people who have severe allergies to vegetable and nut oils. To this end we have formulated a range of ointments using an emulsifying ointment as a base. Emulsifying ointment contains paraffin wax, which is non-allergenic to most people and suits people with nut and vegetable oil allergies. These are marked up as containing the ingredient emulsifying ointment which is a blend of emulsifying wax and paraffin oil and paraffin wax. These paraffin ingredients are inert substances and act much like a barrier cream and skin softner. They have been in use for many years in the trade, it's just that many people now wish to avoid petrochemical derivatives.
